Argos vs. the alternatives
For a few dozen listings a year, do them yourself (on Shopify, the built-in Shopify Magic AI is free) or hand them to a freelancer; to automate dropshipping orders and inventory, use a tool like DSers or AutoDS; to govern the data of a large multichannel catalog, use a PIM. Argos makes sense when your team lists products at scale, on one store or a whole portfolio, and every listing needs to come out complete (copy, on-brand images, pricing, attributes, category) before a human approves it. Setup starts at €3,000, then a pay-as-you-go plan takes over.
What are your options for product listings, and what does each one deliver?
Seven ways to get it done, plus Argos, compared on what they deliver, how they keep your brand consistent, their public pricing, and when each one is the right call. Every third-party price and feature comes from the vendor’s own site or a dated source, listed at the bottom of this page.
| Option | What it delivers | Brand consistency | Public pricing | Pick it if… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-house (an employee, or you) | Everything, if that person masters every tool: copy, images, pricing, data entry. | Depends on your written guidelines and on review. | A salary: US data entry keyers earned a median $19.88/hr in May 2025 (BLS), before overhead. | Low volume, or products that need in-house expertise. |
| Freelancer or virtual assistant | Depends on the job: copy, data entry, sometimes images. | Depends on the brief and on training. | E-commerce VAs in the Philippines: $353 to $1,473/month full-time (OnlineJobs.ph). Outsourced Shopify uploads from $7/hr (Acelerar). | Uneven volume, one-off needs, tight budget. |
| E-commerce agency | Whatever the quote covers. | Depends on the brief and the team assigned. | Quote-based. | You want to hand off more than listings: site, SEO, campaigns. |
| Platform AI (Shopify Magic, WooCommerce extensions, PrestaShop modules) | Suggested copy based on your input; image editing on Shopify. | Tone inferred from the store or set in your prompts, store by store. | Shopify Magic: free. Third-party extensions and modules: each vendor’s price (Kestrel AI: $89/year). | One store, a few listings at a time, each suggestion reviewed. |
| Product content generators (Hypotenuse AI, Describely) | Bulk copy; depending on the plan, attributes, categories, image editing. | Configurable tone and structure; guideline checks in Hypotenuse Enterprise. | Describely: $0.75 per product for up to 500 products. Hypotenuse AI: custom pricing. | You want software your team configures and runs itself. |
| Dropshipping importers (DSers, AutoDS) | Supplier listing import, pricing rules, AI-rewritten titles and descriptions, inventory and order sync. | Tool settings; image editing as an option. | DSers: free, then $19.90 or $49.90/month. AutoDS: from $26.90/month. | Your priority is automating orders and inventory. |
| PIM (Akeneo, Plytix, Salsify) | A single source of product data, governed and syndicated to your channels; AI as an option. | Data quality rules, approval workflows depending on the edition. | Plytix: free up to 100 SKUs, Pro from $149/month. Akeneo Growth: from $45,000/year. Salsify: custom pricing. | Large catalog, many channels, a need to govern product data. |
| Argos | The complete listing from a supplier link: copy, images, pricing, attributes, category, in the store’s format. | Visual identity calibrated for each store at setup; one brief for the whole team. | Setup from €3,000, then pay as you go. | You list at scale, with a human approving every listing. |
Listing in-house: when does it make sense?
An in-house product lister, or you. A close US benchmark: data entry keyers earned a median $19.88 an hour ($41,340 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, before benefits and overhead.
Without a dedicated tool, a single listing means juggling tools: one AI model for the copy, another for the images, Canva or Photoroom to crop, compression, then the copy-paste into your store admin. Expect 45 minutes to an hour per product.
- Upside: the know-how stays in-house, and you control every detail.
- Downside: volume follows available hours. When several people list products, consistency depends on your written guidelines and on review.
- Pick it if: you list few products, or products that need expertise only your team has.
Freelancers and virtual assistants: for what volume?
OnlineJobs.ph, a job board for Filipino virtual assistants, publishes a salary guide (updated for 2025): $353 to $819 a month for a full-time entry-level e-commerce VA, and $826 to $1,473 for an intermediate one. It notes that beginners have no prior experience and need training from the ground up. Outsourcing firms also post hourly rates: Acelerar, for example, advertises Shopify product uploads starting at $7 an hour.
A copywriter delivers copy. Data entry in your store admin, images and pricing are separate skills, so spell them out in the brief.
- Upside: you pay as needed, without hiring.
- Downside: with several contractors, consistency depends on your brief, on training and on review.
- Pick it if: your volume swings month to month, or you have a one-off need.
E-commerce agencies: what do they cover?
Agencies work on a quote, and what they cover depends on it. The upside is a whole team that can also take on your site, SEO or campaigns.
- Pick it if: you want to hand off more than listings, or a one-off project such as a store launch.
Shopify Magic, WooCommerce, PrestaShop: what does platform AI do?
- Shopify
- Shopify Magic is free on every plan. On a product page, it suggests a description based on the details you give it: Shopify recommends at least a product title and two features or keywords. The file editor can replace an image’s background with a solid color or generate a new scene from a prompt, at no additional cost “for a limited time.” The Sidekick assistant can edit products and presents changes for your review before applying them; you can save up to 25 reusable prompts as skills.
- WooCommerce
- Since May 25, 2026, WooCommerce has offered a public beta of AI Product Advisor, an experimental plugin that reviews your existing catalog, builds a tone profile of your store and suggests field-level improvements (titles, descriptions, categories, tags, variations) you can apply in one click. Other extensions sold on the WooCommerce Marketplace write descriptions: Kestrel AI, for example, costs $89 a year and runs on your own OpenAI API key.
- PrestaShop
- The official Care Center offers tutorials, including one on generating a product page with AI by having an AI analyze a supplier’s product description. To generate content in the back office, the PrestaShop Addons marketplace offers third-party modules such as WizardAI (descriptions, summaries, meta tags, image editing).
These tools start from what you give them, or from what is already in your store, and they work inside its admin. On Shopify, each store has its own admin: with several stores, your prompts have to be set up in each one.
- Upside: free or cheap, and already where you work.
- Pick it if: you run one store, list a few products at a time, and review every suggestion.
Hypotenuse AI, Describely: product content generators
Describely charges $0.75 per product for up to 500 products, with unlimited generations, and your first 5 products are free. Data enrichment costs $0.55 per credit and image processing $0.05 per credit; above 500 SKUs, pricing is custom. You set the tone, length and structure of the copy, and connectors link it to Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix or Akeneo.
Hypotenuse AI offers a Basic plan for catalogs under 100 products and an Enterprise plan for large teams, both with custom pricing. Enterprise adds product attribute enrichment, tagging and categorization in your taxonomy, bulk AI image editing, bespoke AI models, content checks against your brand, legal and channel guidelines before publishing, and custom review workflows. Its integrations focus on Shopify and PIMs (Akeneo, Salsify, Plytix…).
On paper, Hypotenuse Enterprise covers much of the same ground as Argos. If you’re a large brand already running a PIM, it plugs into it. Argos is built for store operators who source from suppliers (AliExpress through its official API, every other site through our in-house scraping tools) and sell on Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop. Neither Describely nor Hypotenuse AI lists PrestaShop among its integrations.
- Pick it if: you want self-serve software you pay for per product (Describely), or you’re a large team with a PIM (Hypotenuse AI).
DSers, AutoDS: dropshipping importers
These apps import a supplier listing into your store (with DSers, from a product link, the Chrome extension or a curated collection), apply your pricing rules, then keep inventory, prices and orders in sync with the supplier. AI rewrites titles and descriptions: DSers includes a monthly quota on some plans plus translation into 14 languages; AutoDS lets you pick a tone. For images, DSers offers AI background removal and AI scene images as paid add-ons, and AutoDS has an image editor.
On the Shopify App Store, DSers is free, then $19.90 or $49.90 a month; AutoDS starts at $26.90 a month for 200 imported products. They connect to Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, eBay or TikTok Shop, among others; neither one lists PrestaShop among its sales channels.
It’s a different job: these tools cover the chain from product to order. Argos focuses on the listing itself, built around each store’s style guide, then approved by a human.
- Pick it if: your priority is automating dropshipping orders and inventory on a small budget.
Akeneo, Plytix, Salsify: what is a PIM for?
A PIM centralizes your product data, governs it and syndicates it to your channels. Akeneo offers a free, open-source Community Edition that you install and host yourself; its SaaS Growth package starts at $45,000 a year, with Advanced and Premium on quote. Plytix is free up to 100 SKUs (Standard), then starts at $149 a month for Pro, with prices rising with your SKU count; AI and the Shopify connector are optional add-ons. Salsify doesn’t publish pricing.
These tools are adding AI: description generation in Akeneo from the Growth package, text and image generation and enrichment with the Plytix AI add-on. But their core job is still product data: data model, quality, permissions, approval workflows and syndication to channels.
- Pick it if: you have a large catalog, many channels and marketplaces, and several teams working on the same data.
So what exactly does Argos do?
Argos builds your product listings end to end from a supplier link or an internal database: copy in your store’s voice, images following its style guide, pricing from your formula, the attributes you already have, the category, all in the target store’s format. Step by step: how Argos works.
- One style guide per store: each store’s visual identity is calibrated for you at setup, and the whole team works from the same brief.
- A human always approves: every listing lands in an approval queue, then goes to your store live or as a draft, your call.
- Volume: prepping a listing takes 20 to 30 minutes but runs on its own, in batches; your part is 5 minutes of review and approval.
- Setup: the Argos team reviews your stores, sets everything up and plugs Argos into your stores, in as little as 2 weeks. A pilot run on 10 of your own products, in one of your stores, is included in your setup.
- Cost: setup starts at €3,000, with the exact price set after a review of your stores, then a pay-as-you-go plan (usage credits, maintenance and updates, a dedicated technician).
When is Argos not the right fit?
- You list a few dozen products a year. At 45 minutes to an hour per listing, 20 listings add up to 15 to 20 hours of work: a setup starting at €3,000 doesn’t pay off. Do them yourself or hire a freelancer.
- Your budget is below the setup cost. Shopify Magic is free, and Describely charges per product.
- You need a PIM: governing data, managing permissions, syndicating to many channels. Argos builds listings; it isn’t a PIM.
- Your priority is dropshipping orders and inventory: that’s what DSers and AutoDS do.
- You want listings to go live without human review. Argos never publishes a listing no one has approved.
- You want a tool you can configure yourself, today. The Argos team sets Argos up after reviewing your stores: 2 weeks at the earliest.
